Let's Talk About the Scale

I am sure that some people will read this post and think, OMG, I can’t believe she is writing about a scale…she is such a hypocrite…is weighing herself again…does she still have an eating disorder? Think about what you want, and if you don’t want to read further, please close the page and move on. Thank you! For those who want to stick around and learn more, welcome and let us get started. In this post, we will talk about my journey with the scale. We will also talk about how just like with fitness, living a healthy lifestyle looks different for everyone! From fitness watches to calorie/macro apps, and yes to scales, there is something out there to help you reach your goals so that you feel your best from the inside out. The holidays are here, and it is that time of year when so many people give up on living a healthy lifestyle! WHY? WHY? WHY? You can still eat good food, enjoy delicious holiday cocktails, socialize, celebrate, and still do your WORKOUTS and still eat HEALTHY! This vicious cycle drives me bonkers because it is unhealthy. It is terrible not only for our gut health but also for our minds. My advice to everyone during the holiday season is to have fun and enjoy this beautiful time of year, but don’t give up on all the hard work you did all year before the holidays. If anything, become a little more aware of what you are eating and how you move daily. And yes, this can be a great time of year to use your fitness gadgets, including the scale. But let’s cover some other essential things before discussing this particular Eatsmart scale. After lots of hard work over the past few years, I feel comfortable writing about scales, but I want to talk about these two Eatsmart scales specifically.

Scale Benefits

As a personal trainer, I always weighed my clients and measured them before we started working together. I would also consider and measure them at the end of each month or when our time together ended. When your GOAL is to lose weight, the scale can be very beneficial in the beginning stages of a weight loss journey. As humans, we need a schedule and a goal date for health and fitness. It helps us to stay focused and motivated. And remember, it doesn’t need to be complicated. Starting your journey is about daily movement, healthy eating, and hydration. Don’t overcomplicate it. Start small, and then as you get stronger and healthier, things can start to get fun, like signing up for a race, lifting weights, and adding more “healthy calories” to maintain your strength. It’s just the beginning. The scale is also beneficial for people who are looking to gain weight. If someone has a severe eating disorder or a debilitating disease and weight gain is crucial, a scale is an affordable piece of equipment to ensure you are heading in the right direction. I also have worked with young athletes in high school and college, where weight gain is essential. Plus, their bodies are still growing and developing at that age, so monitoring their weight and caloric intake is crucial. When I played field hockey at the College of William and Mary, we had to weigh ourselves before and after pre-season practices. Because it was so humid, we were doing double practice sessions, and they wanted to ensure that we weren’t losing weight.

Things that affect the number on the scale

The Number on the Scale

1) You are well hydrated, and you weren’t before; 2) Your sodium intake is higher than average (hello holiday foods); 3) You’ve eaten more carbohydrates than usual (again, hello holiday foods); 4) You ate a big meal the night before, and it was later than usual; 5) You didn’t have a bowel movement; 6) You are about to get your period! There was a lot of information to cover in this post about the SCALE, and I want you to remember that you have to do what is right for YOU! If the scale isn’t your cup of tea, that is okay. If you need the scale to hold you accountable, that is okay, too. My point with all of this is that I want YOU to feel your best from the inside out. Eating well and moving your body daily is the best way to do that. Being healthy and working out is not easy, and honestly, it can be uncomfortable and HARD, but I do it because I love how I feel. I love the way I look. And health is wealth these days, and I want to live a long and healthy life!
